John Coleman
Composer Biography
John Coleman is a singer songwriter who produced his first album with the folk rock band Fern Chutney in 1986. ABC TV produced a three part documentary chronicling the process of the creation of this album - writing, performance and recording. In 1989 John produced a solo collection of original songs as a fundraiser for the Australian Council of Churches' Christmas Bowl Appeal. Between 1990 and 2000, John worked with Ian Bartle as part of the duo Coleman and Bartle as well as doing solo work and over this time they produced three CD's - Circle Me, Sunrise After Tilling and Revealing the Holy. A number of songs from these albums have been used for religious broadcasting - both radio and television. ABC TV has produced film clips for four of their songs - two for Christmas specials. In early 2002, John produced a solo album called Pilgrims Together. The title song was used as the theme song for L'Arche International's General Assembly in Swanwick, England in May 2002. John was part of the music team at this gathering and the album was launched there as a fundraising initiative for L'Arche in Australia. In 2005, John produced another solo CD called Slow Action of Love - another fundraising CD for L'Arche. These CDs can be purchased through the L'Arche Australia website - www.larche.org.au. Many of the songs are used both within L'Arche Communities in Australia/New Zealand and overseas and also within churches across various denominations within Australia. While much of Coleman's music is Gospel folk centred - there are some similarities to John Michael Talbot, Peter Kearney and Sydney Carter - the album Sunrise After Tilling is more a mainstream acoustic, storytelling album. Two of the songs from this CD - The Road Less Travelled and Recherche Bay have won Folk Federation Song Writing Competitions and helped to secure a number of performance spots at folk festivals around Australia, including the National Folk Festival in Canberra.
