Peter Grant
Composer Biography
Born in Manchester, England in 1944, Peter Grant was educated at the De La Salle Brothers' West Park Catholic Grammar School in St. Helens, Lancashire.
He emigrated with his family in 1961, arriving in Sydney in May of that year. Following completion of tertiary studies at Granville TAFE, he has had a long and successful career in Regulatory Affairs in the Australian Pharmaceutical Industry until his retirement at the end of 2009. He has been married to his wife Lorraine since 1967 and they have three children and seven grandchildren.
Peter's interest in music and, in particular, liturgical music, goes back to membership of school and parish choirs in England in the 1950s. Although not having any formal qualifications in music, he has gained valuable experience as a member and in leadership of music groups of the post Vatican II "folk" variety and of conventional parish choirs over the past four decades. For the past ten years, Peter has been one of the key music ministry leaders at St. Finbar's Parish, Glenbrook where he now resides. He credits his continued musical development to the encouragement and guidance of his long-time friend and musical mentor, Chris Currie.
Peter has been writing songs since he was a teenager, but turned his talent to liturgical composition in the late 70s. Most of his music has remained unpublished although used by some parish musicians in Australia, U.K. and U.S.A. via his former website. An exception to this is his composition, "Communion Song" , published in As One Voice Vol. 1. More recently, he has completed a setting of the revised English translation of the mass, "Mass for a Pilgrim People" which has been approved by the Australian Catholic Bishops Commission for Liturgy and the International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation and is to be published in mid April as part of the As One Voice Liturgical Series.
