Sandra Sears

  Composer Biography

Sr. Sandra is a member of the Community of Sts. Barnabas & Cecilia, which is based in Peterborough, South Australia, but whose members are dispersed throughout the State. She currently lives in Adelaide, and has been composing hymns, songs and music for liturgy since 1983. She has a Dip. Mus. (1995), in composition. She plays recorder and guitar, and sings. The charism (gift) of the Community is "encouragement" - of gifts in each other, the members of the churches to which they belong, and further out into the secular community, and Sr. Sandra takes this charism seriously. She has worked for many years with Sr. Jean Johnson csbc giving workshops in liturgy and music, particularly in country parishes with few resources. She also writes poetry, and has been involved in creative workshops in the area of writing songs, music and poetry for people who have had no experience in those areas. As a member of a local Anglican congregation, Sr. Sandra brings those skills into the life of her own community, coordinating music and liturgy. She also works voluntarily at the local hospital as a Chaplain, and in pastoral care in her own church community. If all this sounds very serious, Sr. Sandra's policy is, "There's fun to be found in everything!" Making liturgy fun and satisfying, without destroying the solemnity and aim of worship, is an art form, and she works very hard at keeping that balance.
