Janet Whitaker Sullivan
Composer Biography
A native of Berkeley, Janet Sullivan Whitaker is a singer, composer and recording artist creating sacred music for the church and for the world. While many of her works are specifically for the liturgical assembly, she also writes eclectic music for concert audiences, which often include people of every (and no) religious denomination. Janet's music often incorporates drums and percussion, which bring a world music dimension to her sound. A pastoral musician with roots in the lively Oakland church music scene, hers has been a diverse blend of influences: gospel, folk, blues, latin, jazz and various forms of chant. Janet's music is published by Oregon Catholic Press in Portland Oregon. Two of her best known songs, "In Every Age" and "Here At This Table" have been included in anthologies and hymnals throughout the world. Janet's second and third collections, "The Acceptable Time" and "Land of the Living" are available from ocp.org. Janet is a contributing composer and singing member of the Daughters of God, a group of women composers whose self-titled CD of contemporary music has earned two Dove Awards. Janet's fourth solo collection, entitled "Tryin' to Get Ready" was released in May, 2005. Janet holds a B.A. in Music (Voice) from California State University, Hayward (1999). This engaging singer/pianist/percussionist travels around the country as a workshop presenter and concert performer. For the past 5 years, Janet has served as Director of Music and Liturgy at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Piedmont. She continues to write music for her home Diocese of Oakland, and for the global church of today. Janet lives in Hayward, California with her husband and son.
